Prairie du Rocher sits along the Mississippi River in southwestern Illinois, about 60 miles southeast of St. Louis. This small historic town of 454 residents occupies flat prairie land typical of the American Bottom region, where the river's floodplain creates fertile agricultural country. The area experiences a continental climate with hot, humid summers and cold winters, making spring and fall the most comfortable seasons for travel. The primary route to Prairie du Rocher is Illinois Route 3, which runs north-south along the Mississippi River corridor. From St. Louis, take I-255 south to Route 3 south, a drive of about an hour. Route 3 connects the town to Chester to the south and Red Bud to the north. For visitors from the east, Route 150 provides access from Pinckneyville and other inland communities. The nearest Interstate access is I-255, about 20 miles north. Local roads include Route 154, which heads east toward Sparta. Most traffic consists of regional travelers using Route 3 as a scenic alternative to the interstates, plus local agricultural and commuter traffic. The river road attracts motorcyclists and tourists exploring the French Colonial heritage sites scattered throughout the area. EV charging options are limited, so electric vehicle drivers should plan charging stops in larger nearby communities. Prairie du Rocher claims the distinction of being Illinois' oldest town, founded by French settlers in the early 1720s, predating even Cahokia.
