New Grand Chain sits in far southern Illinois along the Ohio River, about 15 miles northwest of Paducah, Kentucky. This small Pulaski County community of around 150 residents occupies bottomland near where the Ohio River makes a sweeping bend eastward. The humid continental climate brings hot, muggy summers and mild winters typical of the lower Ohio Valley. The most direct route to New Grand Chain follows Illinois Route 37 south from Interstate 24, then connects to local roads leading into the community. From the north, visitors typically take I-57 south to I-24 west, then exit at Route 37. The drive from Carbondale takes about 45 minutes via this route. From Paducah, drivers cross into Illinois on US Route 62, then follow local roads northwest along the river. Route 37 serves as the primary north-south corridor connecting New Grand Chain to larger population centers. The area's location in the Cache River watershed means the terrain stays relatively flat, with fertile farmland stretching between wooded river bottoms. Spring flooding occasionally affects low-lying areas near the Ohio River. The nearest EV charging stations are in Metropolis, about 20 miles east. New Grand Chain takes its name from a series of rock ledges that once created dangerous rapids in the Ohio River, forcing boats to portage around the obstruction until the rocks were blasted away in the 1960s.
