This suburban community of 28,800 residents occupies rolling terrain dotted with small lakes and prairie remnants. The area experiences a continental climate with cold winters and warm, humid summers typical of the upper Midwest. Interstate 90 provides the primary highway access, with drivers exiting at Route 47 (Barrington Road) to reach the city center. US Route 14 runs east-west through the southern portion, connecting to nearby Crystal Lake and Woodstock. Route 176 offers another east-west corridor to the north.
