Gonzales sits along the Mississippi River in Ascension Parish, Louisiana, about 20 miles southeast of Baton Rouge. The city serves as a gateway between the capital region and New Orleans, positioned strategically along major transportation corridors that have shaped its development since the 1800s. Interstate 10 provides the primary access to Gonzales, with Exit 177 (LA-44/Burnside Avenue) serving most destinations in the city. From Baton Rouge, drivers take I-10 east for a quick 25-minute trip, while New Orleans lies about 60 miles southeast via the same interstate. Louisiana Highway 30 runs parallel to the river through town, connecting to industrial areas and providing an alternate route to nearby Donaldsonville. Highway 44 cuts north-south through the city center, linking residential areas to the interstate and serving as the main commercial strip. The subtropical climate brings hot, humid summers and mild winters typical of southern Louisiana. Afternoon thunderstorms are common during summer months, and the area occasionally experiences tropical weather systems from the Gulf of Mexico. The flat terrain and proximity to the Mississippi River create a landscape of sugarcane fields, industrial facilities, and residential developments built on former plantation lands. Gonzales calls itself the "Jambalaya Capital of the World" and hosts an annual Jambalaya Festival each Memorial Day weekend, featuring cooking competitions where teams prepare massive pots of the signature Louisiana rice dish.
