Ferryville, WI
Italia
Ferryville sits along the Mississippi River in southwestern Wisconsin, a small community of about 200 residents in Crawford County. The village occupies a scenic stretch of riverfront where the Great River Road (Highway 35) follows the Mississippi's curves through the Driftless Area's distinctive bluff country. Highway 35 provides the main access route, connecting Ferryville to Prairie du Chien 15 miles south and Lynxville 8 miles north. Most visitors arrive via this scenic byway, which runs parallel to the river and offers continuous views of the water and Iowa bluffs across the channel. County Road X branches west from Highway 35 through the village center. For longer trips, drivers typically connect to Highway 18 near Prairie du Chien to reach Madison or other Wisconsin cities. The area experiences a continental climate with cold winters and warm, humid summers. Spring flooding occasionally affects low-lying areas near the river, while the surrounding bluffs provide natural windbreaks. The Driftless Area's unique topography, carved by ancient rivers rather than glaciers, creates the steep-sided valleys and ridges that define the local landscape. Ferryville operates one of the few remaining cable ferries in Wisconsin, the Cassville Car Ferry, which carries vehicles across the Mississippi River to Millville, Iowa. The small ferry runs seasonally and maintains a tradition dating back over a century.
